The historic lands of northern India offer a food experience like no other. This is the land of the Mughlais and the Nwabs. Indulge in the rich butter-based curries and spicy sauces of the Moghul Empire. Indulge in the Awadhi cuisine of Lucknow, rich in spices such as cardamom and saffron and explore the back streets of major cities while tasting delicious street food with your expert local guide. This tour indulges food lovers with many opportunities to taste the delights of both Awadhi and Mughlai cuisines in many different environments, from back streets to the finest restaurants and in chef's homes. This Wandering Wok Tours 11 night Culinary Journey to Northern India takes you to four wonderful cities to explore the sounds, sites and especially the flavours of this colourful region.

Our special itinerary for our Culinary Journey to Northern India -

Day 1 Arrive Delhi.  Upon arrival at the Indira Ghandi International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. Rest of the day is free at leisure. O/N in hotel

Day 2 and 3 Delhi.  Over the next two days we explore Old and New Delhi, embark on a cyclo rickshaw tour through the bustling markets of Muglai-built Old Delhi, visit the famous spice markets and savour a home-cooked lunch in a traditional haveli - an exquisite private mansion in the old city. We eat at a famous restaurant and enjoy a cooking class at Saffron Palate with Ms Neha. We visit India Gate, and drive by the Presidential Palace and Parliament and visit a Sikh Temple to witness the making of 3000 meals per day. O/N in hotel.

Day 4 Delhi-Jaipur (250kms/6 hours drive).  After breakfast we drive to Jaipur, the colourful capital of Rajasthan and part of India's Golden Triangle. This walled city is well known for its delicious food which epitomises the grandeur of Rajasthan cuisine. We embark on a food tour to sample some of this area's famous street food such as kota kachori. O/N in hotel. 

Day 5 Jaipur. After breakfast we visit the famous Amber Fort and enjoy a short elephant ride to the top of the fort. Today will include a hands-on cooking class with lunch at Sujan in the Raj Mahal Palace. Take away a special gift book on Indian spices. O/N in hotel.

Day 6 Jaipur - Agra (260kms/6 hours). After breakfast we drive to Agra and enroute visit Fathpur Sikri, an ancient city in the state of Utta Pradash. The city was built by Akbar, the Moghal Emperor in the year 1571. It was constructed mainly as a tribute to the great Sufi saint Shaikh salim Chistis, who had blessed Akbar with a son. Upon arrival, check at your hotel. This evening is free at leisure. O/N in hotel.

Day 7 Agra. This morning we have an early morning start to visit the beautiful Taj Mahal and then return to the hotel for breakfast. After lunch we embark on a food walk and indulge in some of Agra's best local food and sweets such as petha, kabobs and kulfi while exploring the busy streets and the non-touristy markets of Agra. O/N in hotel.

Day 8 - Train Agra to Lucknow  (4 hours). After breakfast we travel to Tuldla Station to board the Shtabdi train to Lucknow, the home of the Nwabs and the birthplace of Cliff Richard and delicious Awadhi cuisine such as mutton biriyani and makh mahal. Tonight we have dinner at one of Lucknow's famous restaurants, The Oudhyana, renowned for its Awadhi cuisine. O/N in hotel.

Day 9 & 10 Lucknow. Over the next two days we will visit some of the most amazing sights including the Sadat Ali Tomb, the Asifi Imambara, the Husainabad, Kotwara House, La Martiniere School, the Lucknow Residency and SEWA, the Self Employed Women's Association which was established to support the local Chikan artisans.

A fully escorted street food safari will bring you to restaurants to savour dishes ingrained in Indian history. Delight in the wonderful flavours of Tundey Kebabs (as seen on Rick Stein's Indian Odyssey), Raheem's Nihari and Mobeen's Pasanda Kebabs. Sit down to newspaper tablecloths and eat with the locals. Experience the most exciting display of street and feel its heat, aromas and brilliance.  Enjoy an Awadhi  cooking lesson, lunch and dinner at some of Lucknow's finest restaurants. O/N in hotel.

Day 11 Fly Delhi. After breakfast, we fly back to Delhi, where, in the evening, we will indulge in a delicious farewell degustation dinner at one of India's most famous restaurants - Indian Accent (as recommended by Christine Manfield in her book "A Personal Guide to India and Bhutan").

Day 12 Depart Delhi. Final departure to airport to board onward journey.
